Good Scout Week Recap

What a fun and action packed Good Scout Week! It all started off with two fun tailgates – one for Cub Scouts and another for Eagle Scouts – and watching University of Nevada, Reno football on October 22. Good Scout Mike Wurm, executive director for Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows was honored at halftime, and when the game was over, more than 300 Cub Scouts and parents camped out overnight at Mackay Stadium.

In three STEM-related events, students at Lincoln Park and Brown Elementary Schools and Mendive Middle School got to see and walk through the Chincook and Black Hawk helicopters that were landed at those schools by members of the Army Nevada Air Guard.

The week cumulated with Uniform Day and the Good Scout Lunch honoring Wurm. Every table was full and every person applauded Wurm and his work at the Boys & Girls Club’s many locations plus its partnership with Boy Scouts.

NAC is Making Headlines!

Did you see us featured on KOLO 8 or on the front page of the Reno Gazette-Journal last week?  The media is catching on to all of the fun exciting events we have going on!

Volunteer of the Year

In July the Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign War named Trace Conklin, a member of Pack 3396, as their State Outstanding Youth Volunteer of the year.  Each local auxiliary can submit a nomination for youth ages 10-17, based on the quality and amount of volunteer service.  Trace had put in 120 hours volunteering for Sierra Military Hospitality Services, a nonprofit organization which provides hospitality services to troops during their layover time at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.  Trace enjoys talking with these military personnel, and sometimes plays football with them or entertains them with his magic tricks.  In addition to a certificate, Trace received a new backpack and a check for $100.

In June Trace received the Pack 3396 Community Service Medal for his volunteer service.

Eagle Scouts Making a Difference

The California Trail Interpretive Center benefits from Eagle Scout project

The California Trail Interpretive Center recently benefited from a local Eagle Scout project led by Life Scout, Mitchell Martin of Troop 261 in Carlin.

Martin, 16, began working on his project in August and after months of coordination with Ranger Alex Rose at the Trail Center the hiking trail and grounds maintenance project took place on Oct. 8.

Martin’s project focused on five leadership principles and the physical work improved the safety of the trials by clearing brush and filling in holes, making the trails safer for visitors. Assisting Martin in his project were more than 20 volunteers from his Troop 261 and Troops 89 and 93 from Elko.  Click here to read more!

National Jamboree Staff

Do you want to be a part of Scouting history?

The 2017 National Jamboree is looking for three Young Lads to be on staff specifically for the Brownsea Island Experience, July 15th to 30th, 2017.

Here is your opportunity to step back in time and relive the experience the “Young Lads”  had with Lord Baden Powell at the first Boy Scout Camp in 1907 on Brownsea Island in Southern England.  You will be reenacting the role of one of the boys on the Island in dress and in speech and will be playing the games and teaching the skills taught on the Island.

We are looking for three young men from the Nevada Area Council between 16 and 25 years old who are able to pull off looking like a “Young Lad”.  The registration fee for Jamboree Staff under 26 years old is only $425.

For more information about this opportunity, please email Jim Stewart, Council Vice President of Operations at controller@bordertowncasinorv.com or call him on his cell phone, (775) 848-6072.
